Some are very true to tradition (like agua de jamaica and pineapple) and some are inspired by the culture (like mango habanero and watermelon chile), and all of them are crafted to make you feel good. Regular aguas frescas are made with up to 79 grams of added sugar per serving. Agua Bonita has 80% less sugar but 100% of the flavor of traditional aguas frescas and, of course, always real ingredients; real fruit, real good.
Without our culture there would be no aguas frescas. Without farm workers there would be no food on your plate (and definitely no aguas frescas!). This is why we celebrate both our culture and the people in it every chance we get, with every can we make. Our branding is inspired by Mexican textiles and a portion of every purchase of our beautiful product goes towards supporting migrant farm workers via non-profits. 30% of all produce grown in the United States goes directly to landfill because it's not "pretty" - which means it's either slightly too big, too small, or not the right shape. Basically, it’s just not aesthetic enough to sit on store shelves, and that’s where we come in. We rescue as much produce where and when we can, and use the fruit that would otherwise go straight to the landfill for juice to make our aguas frescas – the same way my grandpa did. We choose to serve our non-carbonated aguas frescas in aluminum cans, designed to reflect our beautiful culture, because cans are infinitely recyclable. So you can reach for Agua Bonita knowing it not only tastes good and is good for you, it’s good for the planet and people, too.
Hola, I’m Kayla Castañeda, founder of Agua Bonita. Much like the aguas frescas we make, my family history starts in Mexico and settles in the fruit fields of the Central Valley of California. My ancestors immigrated to the states pursuing the opportunity for a better life and following the migrant farm work as field workers, which led us here – where we grow 60% of the nation’s produce!
Growing up here, my grandpa would bring us home super ripe fruit from the fields that he couldn’t just stand to let go to waste. This fruit would be sprinkled with chile powder or made into aguas frescas for the whole family to enjoy.
When I lost my job mid-pandemic, I took it as “when life gives you lemons, make aguas frescas.” I decided to create something that is reflective of my culture, my family, and my grandpa’s teachings of never letting food go to waste (and not too much sugar – he was diabetic), and Agua Bonita was born.
